It’s Taco Tuesday at our house tonight. Everyone in my family loves tacos, even the baby. Until I got serious about kicking processed food out of my diet, I didn’t think twice about using those packets of taco seasoning on taco night. Have you ever checked out the ingredients? One would think it should just be spices, but in many, there are other lingering ingredients. Taco Bell Taco Seasoning lists maltodextrin, wheat flour, MSG and the list goes on…
1 Packet = 1.25 oz (35 g); Taco Seasoning Mix.
- 1 Packet of 1.25 oz (35 g)
- Ingredients: Wheat Flour, Salt, Dried Garlic, Maltodextrin, Chili Peppers, Spice, Dried Onions, Monosodium Glutamate, Paprika, Sugar, Contains Less than 2% of Silicon Dioxide as an Anticaking Agent, Soybean Oil, and Malic Acid.
- Manufacturer: Kraft Foods North America/Kraft Foods Global, Inc.
Maltodextrin is a food additive in many processed foods. It is mostly derived from corn (which is usually Genetically Modified here in the good ol’ US of A). The starch of the corn is boiled down and then acids and enzymes are added to break the starch down even further leaving it as a white powder. This powder can then be used as a filler in many processed foods. To add to this, maltodextrin is a simple carbohydrate. Even though it’s usually small amounts, it has a higher glycemic index than table sugar. Gycemic index is the the scale used to measure how foods effect your blood sugars.
I’ll write more on the other ingredients at a later time. 🙂
So, it took me awhile to ‘get’ this stuff wasn’t that great and it was soooooo easy to just make my own taco seasoning (seriously, so easy!)
So without further ado, here is my super simple taco seasoning ‘recipe’ if you want to even call it that. Go ahead, try it! Make a whole bunch and then have it on hand already premixed when you need it for tacos.
Taco Seasoning Mix
2 1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp red chili flakes
1/2 tsp sea salt
You could add 1- 1/2 tsp of onion powder if you desired. I don’t because I add real chopped onion to my meat mixture when making tacos.
